This self-teaching video proves that a picture is truly worth a thousand words. Filmed at the Ecology Action research garden, this DVD gives an up-close look at what to do, when to do it, and how to do it best.
We also sell this as a collection with the DVD and packets of seeds for most of the crops discussed in it (mostly grains and compost crops); see item number LDV-6672. |

| Home Oil Press |
| Edible oils and fats are essential for good health. One unfilled need in home self-sufficiency has been the ability to efficiently extract oil using a relatively cheap and simple device. This is it. We particularly love the simplicity and efficiency of this oil press.
Developed for use in areas without power, this hand-crank expeller can process up to 2 liters of oil per hour. At approximately 8 x 5 x 2.5 inches the Piteba is very compact but ruggedly built, and requires little maintenance.
It is suitable for almost all oil-containing seeds and nuts with at least 25% oil in the seed. Generally this press allows continuous pressing of oil seeds/nuts, generally without removing the bark, husk, or outer covering. We currently offer seeds for sunflower and radish especially bred for oil production.
Small size: Approximately 8 x 5 x 2.5 Inch. |

| Mycelium Running |
Paul Stamets, 2005, 352 pp Did you know that trees and other green plants could not grow and reach maturity without symbiotic associations with mushrooms and/or mycelium? Mycelium is an often overlooked key ingredient in any form of permaculture. Fungi in the soil filter water, break down toxic wastes, help to control insect pests and improve the growth of forest and garden plants. Paul Stamets has pioneered the art of mycorestoration, using fungi to improve soil health, and his very practical discoveries, detailed in this book, are like a gold mine for all gardeners.
“This is the first book to give the Kingdom of the Fungi its proper place in the scheme of things. It is the most important book on nature that I’ve seen in years.”
--Gary Lincoff, author of National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms |

| Creating a Forest Garden |
Martin Crawford, 2010, 384 pp.
This was my coffee-break book for about a month and I am still in awe. A brilliant, well-organized book that walks you through the whole process of creating a sustainable forest garden that produces on multiple veritcal levels and largely defends and fertilizes itself. Crawford has something like 500 plants on two acres and regularly picks 20 varieties for his salads which change with the seasons, and recommends you have 50 varieties even for a small garden. The comprehensive directory of over 450 trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennals, herbs, annuals root crops and climbers are mind boggling; almost all edible, but also medicinal, nitrogen-fixing, fiber and even wax producing plants. |

| Clarington Forge D-Handled Spade, 43" length |
| Eight hundred years ago in Northern England, Cistercian monks founded what is now Clarington Forge in Lancashire where the traditional spade and fork were invented. Garden Tools continue to be made there to this day and remain the choice of serious gardeners, landscapers and horticulturists. Clarington Forge products are manufactured using a unique specification steel which results in exceptionally strong tool heads with the flexibility to absorb all the shock and pressure of hard work, without distorting or breaking.
A joy to work with, this is the spade used for bed preparation in our research gardens and pictured in many of the photos in this catalog. The 11" X 7" head is solid forged from a single piece of steel and has a one piece hardwood shaft that is split to form a wishbone handle. This spade does have a tread plate. NOTE: Stain color on spade and fork handles may vary. Overall length of each tool is 43". 4.9 lbs. |
