Brassica oleracea var. italica
(1890) A rich-tasting old Italian heirloom. Compact 2-3’ light-green plants. 3-4” bluish-green central head, then lots of medium-sized side shoots. Matures over a long period-best for home gardens. Out-produces hybrids. Excellent quality, freezes well. 110 seeds.

English variety ready in early Spring and has an excellent flavor. Ample supply of sweet tasting purple flowers. Particularly hardy and ours is the only early variety available.

40-45 days. Also called Rapini. Planted in early spring, producing a quick crop of tender shoots like small broccoli. Don't crowd these, and give plenty of fertility. Braise or steam the whole leafy stems, or stir-fry. Good for fall as well. 110 seeds.

Broccoli, Piricicaba

Brassica oleracea
Piricicaba. 56 days. Named after the city in Brazil (pronounced peer-a-SEE-ca-ba) where there are beautiful waterfalls--and the university that develped this heat-tolerant broccoli. Halfway between a standard grocery store broccoli and a broccoli raab, with large plants that produce lots of succulent small green heads. Heads, stalks and leaves are all sweet and tender. Good frost tolerance for fall sowing, but the thing that got our attention was its hot-weather performance in trials in California. It produced heads when temperatures were in the 90's.110 seeds.

Broccoli, Solstice

Brassica oleracea var. italica
45 days. This open pollinated broccoli produces a very early head, located high up on the stalk away from slugs and snails. These are smaller, early primary heads followed by secondary florets that are ready by the time other varieties produce their primary crop. Produces many harvests of smaller florets rather than one huge head. Seeds started in flats late in March produced plants ready for harvest by June 21 last year. The plant has a beautiful blue-green color, due to the waxy coating which seems to give it great resistance to wet conditions, rots, molds, and freezing. (overwintered here in zone 8) Many harvests of great-tasting florets over a long season.

A unique type. Large compact cauliflower-type plant bears beautiful spiraling apple-green heads up to 6”. Extremely soft texture and magnificent flavor. Snap off individual spears. Does well in North. 110 seeds.
