Saving and planting your own seeds can be addictive - it's fun to participate in the miracle of seeds. When harvesting tomatoes, it's easy to save some seeds for next year. If you've only planted one variety of melon, you can save the seeds you've scooped out before eating. When harvesting lettuce, let a few of the best plants bolt and go to seed, and leave the best beans to dry on the vine for seed. You can develop varieties to match your own needs, that do well in your own particular environment ,or help save an heirloom from extinction. Then, plant your seeds and watch the miracle unfold!
We have books for finding seeds, how to prepare seeds, and growing for seed. At our Ecology Action Research Farm we "save" a lot of rare heirlooms, and we have developed seed strains that have some great qualities.

Pot Maker
Solid maple mold squeezes pieces of newspaper into starter pots. Fill them with soil and plant them out, pot and all, minimizing tranplant shock. Invented by Otto Richter, Canada's largest herb grower. Makes pots about 2 ¼" diam X 2 ¼" tall. We recommend tearing the paper open at the bottom just before planting. A customer suggests asking a newspaper or printer for the ends of newsprint rolls, which they may give away for free.

Seed Saver’s Kit
The most important factor for storing seed, homegrown or commercial, is dryness. Our kit contains one 8 oz. packet of silica gel (see description below) in a zip-lock bag (enough for 5-10 lb. of seed), 8 data keeping forms, and our Booklet 13, Growing To Seed, which gives specific instructions for saving seed. We store seed in jars from our kitchen (like mayonnaise or pickle jars), but Mason jars or Tupperware-type containers are excellent - anything that makes an excellent, durable seal against moisture.
