At Bountiful Gardens we get questions about gardens in every conceivable climate. Sometimes the answers are pretty standard, but often special climates need special approaches. Not all gardeners are made the same (for example kids) and some need a special approach to gardening. We also include other books that fall under the rubric of diversity. Finally there are some approaches to gardening that are not Biointensive, but which have compelling aspects.
Many of these are books we've found most useful over the years, classics that never seem to go out of date, revisions of old favorites, and some new ones that we just couldn't resist.

| Sepp Holzer's Permaculture |
Sepp Holzer, 2011. 256 pp.
A 110+ acre commercial permaculture farm featuring 14,000 fruit trees with diverse understory plants, complete integration of rotationally grazed livestock, terraces and rainwater harvesting on a cold, steep mountainside in Austria. "Sepp Holzer is a Superstar Farmer who turns out an absolutely remarkable volume and variety of food products, all without one smidgen of chemical fertilizer and on land in Austria that an Illinois corn farmer would pronounce too marginal for agriculture." Gene Logsdon |

| Ruth Stout’s Garden Video VHS |
| 23 min, This has been one of our favorite garden videos for many years. Ruth Stout was a proponent of the “no dig/no work” method of gardening. We don’t feel her techniques will work in every soil, and we still double-dig to get soil into shape, but this is a wonderful video of a sassy and determined gardener. Ruth expounds on both her gardening methods (which fed her family year-round) and her philosophy of life. She was 92 when this film was made, and it is absolutely delightful. VHS or DVD format. |

| The Urban Farm Handbook |
| The Urban Farm Handbook: city-Slicker Resources for Growing, Raising, Sourcing, Trading, and Preparing What You Eat
This is an amazing book, really several in one. It is a journal of a family living in town that converted over to raising nearly all their own food, with engaging stories of how they did this. It is a handbook that provides a template for your own conversion. It is a very personal story of transformation. And it is a series of profiles of very remarkable people who exemplify some aspect of the urban farm, such as beekeepers or the unlikely rabbit farmer. Finally they manage to fit in some great recipes, like Recipes for a Spring Meal: Spring Green, Parsnip and Caterpillar (optional) Soup and Mini Arugula and Goat Cheese Souffles. Many resources and charts (like plants for livestock). |

| Zen of Gardening in the High and Arid West |
David Wann, 2003, 219 pp.
We get a lot of questions from gardeners in the high dry western mountains, and this book has the answers. John Jeavons has a quote on the back, "This book contains a wealth of gardening information -- not just for the region for which it is written, but for gardeners everywhere. filled with an immense number of tips, this inspiring guide includes a diverse number of topics -- from fruit trees to Gandhi and politics, building soil to drying flowers, biologically intensive practices, season extenders, lowering energy bills with horticulture, flowering bulbs, water conservation and more. It's a great buy!" |
