At Bountiful Gardens we get questions about gardens in every conceivable climate. Sometimes the answers are pretty standard, but often special climates need special approaches. Not all gardeners are made the same (for example kids) and some need a special approach to gardening. We also include other books that fall under the rubric of diversity. Finally there are some approaches to gardening that are not Biointensive, but which have compelling aspects.
Many of these are books we've found most useful over the years, classics that never seem to go out of date, revisions of old favorites, and some new ones that we just couldn't resist.

| Four-Season Harvest |
Eliot Coleman, rev. ed. 1999, 242 pp.
Elliot Coleman has fresh green vegetables from his garden all winter, in Maine. This is how he does it, without expensive heating, but with many ingenious homemade solutions and careful selection of crops and planting methods. On a trip to southern France, he realized that Maine is at the same latitude. This sent him on a search for ways to grow plants year round, and European crops bred for that purpose. Full of ideas, plans and great color pictures so you can do it too. |

| Golden Rule Farm's Guide to Growing Early Tomatoes |

John Jeavons came back from a Mid-West teaching visit raving about this book. Want to have ripe tomatoes early? Craig successfully grows red tomatoes and harvests them as early as April 24. | Grasp The Nettle: Making Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Work |
| Peter Proctor, rev. ed. 2004, 192 pp.
We have been looking for years for an easily understood but practical book on biodynamic gardening. Rudolf Steiner's lectures are fascinating but a bit theoretical. Subsequent books have been hard to read or pretty esoteric in describing the preparations. We finally had to go to New Zealand to find this book. Peter Proctor has over 60 years experience as a biodynamic farmer, but goes way beyond that. He draws from the experience of biodynamic farmers all over the world. |

| The Holistic Garden |
Clinton R Kraft, 1995, 60 pp.
This small homemade-style book is written by an avid gardener who has read our Ecology Action publications and put them to use in his own garden. What intrigues me about this one is that he concentrates on the most nutritious plants, rather than on the usual popular ones. He shares his own experiences with crops chosen for their hardiness, nutrition, and contribution to the soil. Reading this is like having a conversation with a neighbor who is really turned on about feeding both himself and the earth from his own garden. |

Each with many color pictures showing stages of growth, the tastiest parts and similar plants to avoid. Willl show you weeds you pull out in your garden are every bit as good as the plants you intentionally grow. For example, autumn olive, an invasive tree in much of the United States is the berry of choice for making fruit leather. |

| Pathways to Abundant Gardens |
Craig R. Elevitch, 2007, 114 pp.
This inspirational book, with beautiful photos of farmers in their gardens in Hawai'i, is filled with quotes from over twenty successful gardeners, speaking not of the small details, but of the larger overview each of them has developed, the basic foundations of their ways of gardening. John Jeavons, author of "How to Grow More Vegetables," calls this "One of the most beautiful, exciting, and inspiring books I have seen!" Also includes a wide selection of gardening tips, gleaned from the experience of the gardeners. Heeding the advice of these wise folks will indeed lead to an abundant garden. |
