The best protection from insects and diseases is healthy soil, plant diversity, and restoration of the natural balance. An organic garden in good tilth will generally have no problems, but bad things do occasionally happen. See our Plant Protection Supplies section for the least toxic solutions.
The Organic Gardeners Handbook is the best book we know of for effective natural controls. The A-Z Guide has a good overview and approach and listings on specific pests and diseases. There are listed several good books on prevention, a couple on greenhouse management, a couple on permaculture and its' holistic approach.
Finally, we include our How To Grow and the Sustainable Vegetable Garden because they are your best defense - growing organic, healthy, sustainable soil and plants using the best method for long-term success.

| Complete Guide to Companion Planting: Everything You Need to Know to Make Your Garden Successful |
| Dale Mayer, 2011, 288 pp.
Just like humans, some plants like each other and others don't, and this can have a significant effect on how well they grow. The science/art of this is companion planting.
Companion planting is an essential element of biointensive gardening, biodynamic gardening, and permaculture, but few books have been written that are seriously comprehensive, and this one is the best one yet.
I like that it covers a lot of vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruits, bulbs, shrubs, bugs, etc. Dale includes a lot of new research - she cites companions/enemies that I was not aware of. I wish she was clearer at times about what is an ally and what is a companion.
Half the book is devoted to how to garden with companions, much of which is not needed for an experienced gardener, but the other half is the best listing of companions yet written. |

| Good Companions Collection |
| Companion planting works for many reasons. Attracting pollinators for better fruit set is important, (especially with squashes and some tomatoes.) Attracting insects that eat the insects we don’t want is another very important benefit. Most predator insects need nectar and pollen to complete their life cycle. Some plants have smell or tastes that repel pests, and some secrete chemicals from their roots to repel pests. This collection gives your garden all 4 of those defenses, so that when aphids and other pests arrive, the right predators and conditions will be there to control them, and the pollinators will make sure your harvest is abundant. 8 pkts. |
