A truly ancient food that has been cultivated for over 4,000 years. Watermelons have an extremely high water content, approximately 92%, giving their flesh a juicy and thirst-quenching texture which is also subtly crunchy. So it can be surprising that watermelons are a highly nutritious food.
Watermelons are subtropical plants and need temperatures higher than about 25 C (77 F) to thrive. Needs a pretty long, and preferably dry, growing season, so best to start seeds indoors. Prefers light, well-drained soils, but our varieties work well in most areas. Prefers a pH between 5.5 and 7. Greedy feeders so needs adequate N.
