Tolerates cold, heat, drought, and poor soil. Hardy to zone 4 (-30 to -20 F).
BOTANICAL NAME: Vicia villosa
DESCRIPTION: We consider vetch one of the easiest cover crops for home gardens, because it is easy to pull when you want the bed for something else. Enriches the soil all winter, blooms like crazy in spring. Good bee plant. When you want to plant something else, just yank the plant and it breaks off easily, leaving its nitrogen-rich roots in place.
Best vetch for cold climates survives temperatures to 25 below zero (zone 4). Plant in late summer to fall for winter protection from erosion. Accepts low fertility but not flooding. Not as vigorous in milder climates but still gives high yields of cover, compost, or pasture if allowed to fully mature.
