SEED CODE: N
SEEDS PER PACKET: 20
APPROXIMATE GERMINATION DAYS: 10-20
SOIL TEMPERATURE FOR GERMINATION: 86F
PLANTING DEPTH: 1 ˝ - 2"
WHEN TO PLANT: 3-4 weeks before last spring frost.
PACKET INSTRUCTIONS: Start seed in flats or pot (up to a month before last frost date indoors). Carefully transplant seedlings 18" apart after threat of frost has past. Mulch can help even out soil moisture, but where squash bugs are a problem, mulch will give them hiding places. Diatom Dust
on the stems and surrounding soil helps against squash bugs. We don't recommend over head watering of squash plants as water on the leaves tends to create mold.
Harvest before heavy frost or when stems are dry. Leave 1 inch of stem on the harvested squash for better storing. These squash have the best flavor one month or more after storing/curing indoors.
BOTANICAL NAME: Cucurbita maxima
DESCRIPTION: Oregon heirloom with vigorous vines, producing a large yield of big, round, sweet squash even in cool or difficult conditions. Medium-dry flesh holds its shape well and is good either on its own or in winter stew and casseroles. We now have Carol Deppe's "Oregon Homestead" strain selected fro rich flavor, strong sprouting in cold soil and early ripening. Grown for us, by our Jason Menesini at Strong Mountain Farm. It is an excellent keeper - just store the un-bruised ripe fruits in any cool, dry place - like a closet, kitchen floor or even under the bed! Flavor actually improves with a couple of months of storage. Compact shape and a small seed cavity so you get a lot of good food.
