PACKET INSTRUCTIONS: Cultivate similar to corn. Plant when the soil is warm. Likes a rich garden soil that has been well-prepared but does well in most soils that have a neutral pH. Plant ¼" deep and 7" apart. Good drainage and full sun are important. Sorghum is self-pollinating so they don't have to be planted in blocks (as corn does) but please note it will cross pollinate - if you were thinking of saving seed.
Harvest plants when you cannot cut multiple seeds with your thumbnail. Cut the head and some stalk for easier handling. The rest of the plant can be used for compost.
BOTANICAL NAME: Sorghum bicolor
DESCRIPTION: A 5-8’ tall and very productive grain,
for syrup grain, and compost. Although the grain is not as
mild-flavored as varieties bred for just that purpose. Dale is
invaluable as a multi-purpose variety. It can also be used to make
gluten-free beer. It does well in northern climates.
