Plant broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, chard, collards, kale, and kohlrabi about 3 months before first frost; carrots about 10 weeks; turnips and beets about 8 weeks. Plant spinach in September for fall harvest and up to frost for an excellent early spring harvest. Spinach doesn't germinate well if soil temperature is above 85 F.
We recommend starting fall crops in pots or flats in a cool and shady place so they can avoid the heat and extreme uv rays, stay moist, and then be planted later into beds that are still full of summer crops right now.
