Our fall onions are all long-day length or are Mill Creek. They are all good keepers as well as very hardy. Both Sourthport varieties produce green onions as well.
The more green leaves present when the formation of the bulb begins, as well as their size, determines the bulb size. Growing onions through the winter gets an extra early start with onions so that the plants are of a good size when bulbing begins. In our gardens here in Willits, onion seeds are started in flats in mid-January, the earliest vegetable crop to be started in the new year, the beginning of the annual planting cycle.
