You can grow okra anywhere you can grow tomatoes. It is cultivated much like corn, except it likes that Southern moist heat. It will even tolerate some light fall frost. Disease resistant. It needs little care. In short season areas, it will need to be started 2-4 weeks indoors, and then planted out in warm, settled weather. That said; it grows best if you can direct seed right into your garden bed.
The pods are ideal for soups, stews, fried, and in curries or gumbos. The ripe seeds are parched and used instead of Coffee.
