WHEN TO PLANT: Early Spring or Fall in mild winter areas
PACKET INSTRUCTIONS: Broadcast into tilled and finely-raked soil before the fall rains in mild climates or 10 days before last frost in Spring in cooler climates. Plants will survive the winter and produce grain if the winter temperatures don't stay below 20F degrees during the daytime and the ground doesn't freeze. May be started in flats and transplanted if beds are not ready. Plant just deep enough to cover the seed (about ˝"). A cool and wet spring is ideal for growing oats. Be sure to dry fully before storing.
BOTANICAL NAME: Avena nuda
DESCRIPTION: Most oats are fed to
livestock or made into cereal because the grains are hard to
hull without damage. This variety sheds its hull much more
easily so it can be used for food without expensive threshing
equipment. Softer than other grains, so use care in handling.
Medium height variety for early spring planting and late
summer harvest. Umbrella-like grain heads and lots of straw
for compost (carbon source). Plants shed water easily making them less susceptible to disease.
