It goes dormant in drought and continues growth with water, the best growth is continuous. Cut seed heads a few days before they are ripe and sun dry them to harvest before the birds get the seed. Pearl is the easiest to thresh millet - try rubbing between gloved hands or put grain on a tarp and shuffle across it in clean shoes.
BOTANICAL NAME: Pennisetum americanum
DESCRIPTION: This is a great choice for the home garden because it is so very easy to hull. Like the "hulless" barleys or modern wheat, in that it has hulls, but they fall off easily and can be threshed without equipment. As with most of our grain seeds it was grown at one of our own gardens.
