GROW BIOINTENSIVEŽ CULTURAL INFO: Warm, Hot/ Matures 10-13 /Grain Yield 3-12; dry biomass 12-72 / Spacing 7"
DAYS TO MATURITY:
SEED CODE: C
SEEDS PER PACKET: 560
APPROXIMATE GERMINATION DAYS: 5-10
SOIL TEMPERATURE FOR GERMINATION: 65F
PLANTING DEPTH: 1/2 - 1"
WHEN TO PLANT: Spring or Summer
PACKET INSTRUCTIONS: Plant after last frost 7" apart in a well-worked soil with good nutrients. Soil must be warm to germinate. Water until plants are 6" high, and occasionally after. Total drought will induce dormancy but millet doesn't need lots of water - just enough to keep growing. This is best done by deep watering fairly seldom if you need to water at all. Cut seed heads a few days before ripening and sun dry to harvest before the birds get the seed. Flashtape
, caging and hawk dummies are our strategies.
BOTANICAL NAME: Echinochloa frumentacea
DESCRIPTION: Highly productive and early. Very leafy with many grain-bearing tillers. Height is 3-6'. Tolerates waterlogged soils very well. Excellent biomass--almost as much as corn. Will re-grow after cutting, and dries faster than Sudan grass. It can be difficult to thresh and clean. A close relative has been exploited commercially for forage under the name "Billion Dollar Grass".
