Romaine (Cos or 'Roman lettuce') has a tall head of sturdy leaves with firm crunchy ribs down their centers. The thick ribs, especially on the older outer leaves, should have a milky fluid which gives the romaine the typically fine-bitter herb taste. Very nutritious and healthy food.
Tolerates dry hot weather well for a lettuce. Also slow to go to seed. Prefers a moderately good, loose, well-drained soil. Be sure to water regularly. All of our varieties are self-blanching and require no tying up.
