DESCRIPTION: Heirloom from before 1885. Strong, upright plants to 3'. Very tasty and cold tolerant. Bears 7-8" pods with 5-6 huge red-brown beans. Beautiful black and white flowers attract beneficial insects. Use as salad greens when young, edible flowers, shelled green like edamame, or as dry beans-a real self-sufficiency crop. One gardener wrote, "These did a wonderful job. They were planted in ordinary soil, in full sun…they grew tall and produced beautiful flowers and plenty of beans."

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: A cool season plant. Plant seeds directly into beds. In cold winter areas plant favas as early in the spring as the soil can be worked. Grows to 4-5', doesn't need staking. In milder climate areas, plant in the fall for late winter or early spring harvest. Time until harvest depends on temperature. Best to inoculate seeds before planting. CAUTION: some people are allergic to fava beans.
