A great, all-around summer cover crop that fixes a lot of nitrogen (up to .57 pounds per 100 square feet) and is good at competing with summer weeds, even bermuda grass. Tolerates some shade; can be planted in orchards or vineyards. Can be used for hay or grain in addition to making compost. Cowpeas are also excellent attractants for beneficial insects due to nectar-releasing sites on the leaflets. They are adaptable, drought-tolerant and productive.
