Easily grown in average garden soil without many stones (which cause deformities and splitting). Likes full sun, light soil, and pH 5.5-6.8. Shorter varieties will cope better with clay or rocks. Keep soil moist. Deep, loose, and fertile sandy loams and peat soils with good moisture-holding capacity grow the straightest and smoothest roots. Gently mulch to retain moisture, speed germination and block the sun from the roots. Medicinal: de-toxifier, supports liver, kidneys, diuretic, etc.
Do not put out until after all frost is past, but you can start the seed indoors 3 weeks before. Plant every 2-3 weeks for a constant supply. Avoid freshly manured soil. Do not allow the seed-bed to dry out or crust after planting. If soil is heavy, cover the seed with compost, sand or even vermiculite instead of soil to make emergence easier (they love sand). Keep weeded.
