BOTANICAL NAME: Asclepias tuberosa
DESCRIPTION: Favorite food source for monarch butterflies, as well as many others, and a beautiful flower for the garden. Attracts beneficial pest-fighting insects as well. Wonderful cut flower. Remember that monarch butterflies start out as caterpillars with narrow black white and green, vertical stripes. They will stay on the butterfly weed and turn into glorious butterflies.
It is slow to emerge in the spring, so mark its location to avoid accidental digging before new growth starts. If you don't want it to spread, deadhead faded blooms before seedpods mature. It is sometimes called milkweed because it produces a milky sap when cut.
