Tolerant of poor soil, and short growing seasons. That said, the seeds mature over a long period, making a single harvest difficult, and the hulls are hard to remove. However, Buckwheat is well worth experimenting with, since it is the fast-growing summer compost crop of choice. Easy to hoe in or pull for compost. Good "nurse crop" for more delicate crops. Large numbers of flowers make it a famous honey plant.
