PACKET INSTRUCTIONS: Broadcast seed in well-dug and composted beds in spring or early summer after the soil is warm. This is a quick growing plant. May be used as a "nurse crop" by hoeing small areas of open soil into the buckwheat bed and transplanting cabbage or other pest-susceptible crop into them. Buckwheat may be harvested for compost or turned in during the Fall. When planting keep in mind the plants are frost sensitive.
BOTANICAL NAME: Fagopyrum esculentum
DESCRIPTION: This very fast-growing cover crop has low grain yield, but is tolerant of cool temps (though it is not frost hardy), and is high in lysine. Widely used as a bee plant, green manure, "nurse" plant for seedlings, as compost material, and to attract wildlife. Will grow on nearly any soil, but prefers light, well-drained soil.
