BOTANICAL NAME Arctostaphylos uva-ursi
DESCRIPTION: Handsome groundcover with blue-gray leaves on woody deep-red branches. Native to the mountains, needs good drainage, but takes cold and heat. Tea is effective against bladder infections, and is very palatable, much like green tea. Also common in Native American smoking mixtures.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: Seeds need a moist chilling period in a dark place before they will sprout-a jar with something moist (moss, cotton) but not wet stored in the refrigerator (not freezer) for 4 months will do this. Seeds will also need warm stratification first-please see the information sheet sent with your order. Start in flats for first year, then transplant to a large pot for another year, then plant. Generally, prepare the permanent spot as you would any perennial crop.
