DESCRIPTION: Large, tender tasty leaves with deep red centers. Heat-loving green from Asia that tastes like spinach. Great in containers. Pinch top when about 6" to encourage bushy growth. Very tender and succulent when young--plant in succession, harvest when 10-14" tall. Wants heat and moisture. Not good raw. Whole plant must be harvested - picking leaf by leaf it gets bitter. Heat tolerant. Multi-stalked, 18-20" tall.
Kim Powers, a long-time customer, tells us this is his favorite leaf amaranth. He loves amaranths and has grown numerous varieties for leaf (too cold there to hope for grain) and this is his absolute favorite. If you pick the leaves fairly young they are the butteriest, creamiest cooked leaves.

PACKET LABEL INSTRUCTIONS: Start in flats or seed directly after all danger of frost is past, on 6" centers. Likes well-drained soil in good tilth and fairly level (so the small seeds do not wash away). Cover seeds thinly with soil (about 1/8"). To germinate keep soil moist - water moderately. After 3-5 weeks start harvesting leaves, but for continued production don't harvest more than half the plant at once.
